How often should you tune your piano?

Most piano owners know that their instrument needs to be tuned, but there is often uncertainty about how frequently this should be done. 


For most pianos in private homes, two tunings per year is a sensible recommendation. However, the correct interval also depends on the piano, its environment, how frequently it is played and the standard of tuning stability the owner expects. 


Regular tuning is not simply about correcting notes that sound wrong. It helps maintain the overall string tension of the instrument, improves tuning stability and allows the piano to retain its musical character throughout the year.


Why does a piano go out of tune?


The greatest influence on a piano's tuning stability is usually relative humidity. 


In Germany, indoor air can become extremely dry during winter, particularly when central heating is used. Humidity levels may fall below 30%. During summer, they can rise above 60% or even 70%. 


The wooden components of the piano absorb and release moisture as the humidity changes. The soundboard moves slightly as its moisture content increases and decreases. These movements are small, but they affect the tension of more than 200 strings. 


As humidity rises, the lower tenor area of the piano will often move upwards in pitch. When the air becomes very dry, the opposite commonly occurs. 


This seasonal movement is normal. Even an excellent piano in good condition will not remain completely unchanged throughout the year. 


Why regular tuning improves stability


A piano that is tuned regularly generally requires smaller corrections at each appointment. 


This is important because tuning stability is not only determined by whether each note is correct at the end of the visit. The strings and tuning pins must also be left in a stable condition so that the tuning remains secure when the piano is played. 


When the piano is allowed to drift for several years, the overall pitch may fall considerably. Returning it to the correct tension then requires larger adjustments across the entire instrument. 


The aim is not simply to make the piano correct for one afternoon. It is to improve the stability of the instrument over the months and years that follow. 


What if the piano has not been tuned for several years?


A piano that has not been tuned for a long time may require a pitch raise before it can be tuned accurately. 


A pitch raise restores the overall string tension of the piano. Because increasing the tension of one section affects the rest of the instrument, this first appointment often takes longer than a routine tuning. 


The piano may also need a second tuning approximately two to three months later. 


The first visit restores the pitch and brings the instrument back towards the correct tension. The follow-up tuning allows the piano to settle and usually produces a considerably more stable result. 


This does not necessarily mean that the piano is damaged. It simply reflects the fact that a large amount of tension has been returned to the instrument.


What influences tuning stability?


Humidity is the largest factor, but it is not the only one.


Tuning stability is also affected by:


  • the skill and experience of the piano tuner

  • the quality and condition of the piano

  • the condition of the tuning plank, strings and bridges

  • the stability of the room environment

  • direct sunlight and nearby heating sources

  • underfloor heating

  • how heavily the piano is played


A good instrument in a stable environment will usually hold its tuning better than a piano exposed to large seasonal changes. However, the quality of the tuning itself is equally important.


Why the experience of the tuner matters


Learning to tune a piano involves three separate skills. 


The first is learning to listen. This means more than identifying whether a note is sharp or flat. The tuner must hear clean unisons, balanced intervals and the musical relationships across the complete keyboard. 


The second is learning to control the tuning pin. Extremely small and precise movements are required. This physical control develops through many years and thousands of hours of practice. 


The third is learning to leave the string stable. A note is not finished simply because it is correct at that moment. The tuning pin and string must be left in a stable condition so that the note remains secure after the piano has been played. A piano contains more than 200 tuning pins. Each one requires the same care. Electronic tuning devices can be very useful tools, but they do not replace listening, judgement or the physical ability to produce a stable tuning.


Should every piano be tuned twice a year?


Twice yearly is a strong general recommendation for pianos in private homes. 


Pianos used by teachers, schools, universities, rehearsal spaces and professional musicians may require more frequent tuning. Concert instruments may be tuned before every performance. 


A piano that is played only occasionally may appear to need less attention. Even so, regular tuning helps prevent large changes in pitch and gives the technician an opportunity to identify developing mechanical or structural problems. 


The exact interval should therefore be based on the instrument and the expectations of the owner rather than on a rigid rule.


What should a good tuning achieve?


A successful tuning is about more than correct pitch. 


When the musical relationships across the piano are balanced, chords become richer and more coherent. Melodic lines gain lift and begin to sing more naturally. The tone develops greater depth, warmth and clarity. 


These qualities can be difficult to measure, but they are immediately recognisable to the player. A beautifully tuned piano stops drawing attention to individual notes. The instrument begins to work as a complete musical voice. 


That is why regular tuning matters. It preserves stability, protects the musical quality of the piano and helps the instrument remain a pleasure to play.
