Why can two piano tuners leave the same piano sounding different?

Many piano owners assume that tuning is an exact mechanical process.


A note is either correct or incorrect. An electronic device shows the required pitch, the tuner adjusts the string and the job is finished.


In practice, two experienced tuners can work on the same piano and leave it sounding noticeably different.


Both tunings may be technically acceptable. One, however, may have greater stability, cleaner unisons, a more natural musical stretch and a stronger sense of coherence across the instrument.


The difference lies in listening, judgement and control.


Piano tuning is about relationships


A piano is not a collection of 88 isolated notes.


Every note exists in relation to the others. Octaves, fifths, thirds and unisons interact across the complete range of the instrument.


The tuner must decide how these relationships should develop from the bass to the treble.


This is particularly important because piano strings do not behave as perfect mathematical models. Their stiffness causes the overtones to deviate slightly from ideal harmonic relationships. For this reason, a piano normally requires a degree of stretch, with the bass tuned slightly lower and the treble slightly higher than a purely mathematical system would suggest.


The correct amount of stretch is not identical for every piano.


A small upright, a large concert grand and an older domestic instrument each require different judgement. The scale design, string length, tonal character and condition of the piano all influence the final result.


The first skill: learning to listen


The most important early skill for a tuner is learning to listen. This is different from simply hearing.


A trained tuner listens for the speed and character of beats within intervals, the cleanliness of unisons and the way one section of the piano connects to the next.


Over time, this listening becomes increasingly musical.


The question is no longer only:

"Is this note correct?"


It becomes:

"Does this relationship support the musical character of this piano?"


A good tuning satisfies technical requirements. A beautiful tuning also has a sense of balance, depth and lift.


The chords bloom naturally. The melodic area begins to sing. The instrument feels more alive without becoming harsh or exaggerated.


The second skill: controlling the tuning pin


A piano string is adjusted by moving a steel tuning pin set tightly into the tuning plank.

The movement required can be extremely small.


Simply reaching the correct pitch is not enough. The tuner must control the movement of the pin, the flex of the pin and the distribution of tension along the string.


This is a physical skill.


It cannot be learnt from an app or understood fully from theory. It develops through repetition, concentration and many thousands of individual adjustments.


An electronic device may show where the pitch should be. It cannot make the tuning hammer move correctly.


The third skill: creating stability


The least visible part of tuning is often the most important.

A string can appear perfectly in tune and still be unstable.


During tuning, tension must be distributed correctly through the different sections of the string. The tuning pin must also be left in a stable position.


If this is not done well, the note may move as soon as the piano is played firmly.

Learning to create a stable tuning takes many years. Every piano responds differently, and more than 200 individual strings must be treated with the same attention.


This is why speed alone is not a useful measure of tuning quality. A fast tuner may be exceptional. A slow tuner may be careful. Neither fact guarantees the result.


The important questions are whether the tuning is musical and whether it remains stable.


Technology is a tool, not a replacement for judgement


Modern electronic tuning devices are highly developed and can be extremely useful.


They help calculate tuning curves, analyse pitch and provide reliable reference information. Many excellent tuners use them.


However, the device does not decide whether the piano has sufficient lift in the treble, whether the unisons are truly clean or whether the musical stretch suits the character of the instrument.


It also cannot control or stabilise the tuning pin.


A lesson from an exceptional tuner


Early in my career, I encountered the work of a tuner who had an extraordinary ability to make almost any piano sing.


On one occasion, I arrived at an older Yamaha grand in an auditorium orchestra pit. The piano was heavily used and not in especially good mechanical condition.


It had been tuned two days earlier. The tuner had apparently been given only around 50 minutes, while people were setting up around him.


I expected a serviceable result. Instead, the tuning was beautiful.


The stretch was musical, the unisons were clean and the stability was remarkable. Most importantly, the piano was an unexpected pleasure to play.


It was still an older, well-used Yamaha. Nothing about its design or mechanical condition had changed.


The quality of the tuning had simply allowed the instrument to reveal far more of its musical potential.


I later encountered an old overdamper piano he had tuned. It had inconsistent and loose tuning pins and was exactly the type of instrument many tuners would quickly dismiss as nearly untunable.


He had still made it sound more musical than any other overdamper piano I had played.


That experience left a lasting impression on me: before blaming the instrument, a tuner should first ask whether it has been given the finest tuning they are capable of producing.


What should the owner notice?


A well-tuned piano may sound warmer, clearer or more resonant, but these words describe only part of the change.

The deeper improvement is usually coherence.


The notes begin to support one another. Chords become more satisfying. The melody has greater lift. The piano develops a sense of glow and depth.


The instrument no longer distracts the player with unstable unisons or awkward musical relationships.


It begins to sing.


That is why two tuners can leave the same piano sounding different. Piano tuning is not simply a matter of reaching the correct frequency.


It is a craft built through listening, control, stability and a continuing desire to create something beautiful.
